That mouthful is the title of the collection of short stories we read by Alice Munro for May. Alice Munro is well known for her short stories, having won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2013. Out of 114 total winners in her category, Munro was the second Canadian and 13th woman to win the prize.
While some agreed that her stories had depth and meaning, and that she certainly had talent, the majority of the group struggled with the genre of short stories in general. They decided they much prefer a full length book, they felt a little cheated, just as you may start to get invested in the story, or a character, it ends, only to be thrust into a new story!
For those who do not have a lot of time, or like the simplicity of the short story, her work is very rich, her language is beautiful, and I can definitely see why the Nobel Academy deemed her worthy of the award.
Speaking of beginnings and endings; it is with bittersweet regret that I write this blog today. Last night was my last book group I will be running for the library. I am not leaving the library itself, I am going back to school.
I am very excited, and really looking forward to this next chapter in my life. I decided that with all of the new obligations school will bring along with all of my outside commitments and responsibilities, I will no longer be able to effectively run the book group.
This was a very difficult decision to make, the book group is one of the things I really love about my job, and I am going to miss it very much, but I have to make sure that I have enough time to devote to my studies.
I wish to thank each and every person who has ever attended one of my book groups - especially my core group - thank you all so much for making it such an amazing experience, you brought me a world of knowledge, insight, ideas, and encouraged me to go outside of my comfort zone to make sure you went out of yours, and for that I will be eternally grateful!
I will of course still be at the library, please come find me, say hi, stay in touch, and I am always happy to be interrupted and answer any and all questions about anything!!!
For those who do not know, the wonderful Karen Mattes is going to be starting a new book group - to take the space of the one I am closing - her group will be starting Monday, June 25th at 6:30, they are reading A Visit from the Goon Squad! I highly recommend checking it out :)
